We’ve had numerous calls to our office from concerned clients over the last several weeks regarding outside sources posing as United Healthcare, Aetna, and other reputable companies. These callers are offering free groceries and rebates for Medicare beneficiaries. However, most of these callers ask you to provide your name, verify your Medicare ID, or share other personal information.
Key Tips to Protect Your Identity and Coverage
- Never share info. Do not give your Medicare ID, social security number, or personal details to unverified callers.
- Verify with carriers. Contact your specific agent, Medicare Advantage carrier, or Supplement carrier directly to check benefit eligibility.
- Understand plan limits. Most extra grocery and rebate benefits are strictly limited to specific plans.
- Check eligibility rules. Extra benefits usually require enrollment in dual Medicare/Medicaid plans, chronic condition plans, or specific geographic regions.
- Know enrollment dates. You cannot change plans outside the standard Open Enrollment period (October 15 – December 7) unless you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period.
